The term “Glasnost” means “openness” and was the name for the social and political reforms to allow the people of the Soviet Union to be all knowing about the country. All kinds of media broadcasted information about the country to the people. Glasnost permitted criticism of government officials on/in any media that was accessible to the public. The of information about increasing crime and crimes by the government caused panic in the people. "This caused an increase in social protests in a nation used to living under the strictest government control, and went against the goals of Gorbachev."
